'A miracle nobody more seriously hurt': Chaotic scenes as people rush to help after double-decker bus crash in city centre

People rushed to help after a major double-decker bus crash in Manchester city centre that saw seven people taken to hospital.

One witness said it was a 'miracle nobody was hurt' in the collision, that saw the Stagecoach bus 'demolish' the central reservation, knock over a traffic light and leave passengers 'shaken up'.

Emergency services raced to the scene of the incident, at the junction of Whitworth Street and Oxford Street shortly after midday. Dramatic pictures showed the bus with a smashed windscreen and debris across the road.

The busy city centre junction remained closed for a number of hours, as the fire service confirmed seven people were rushed to hospital. The M.E.N understands there were between 15 to 20 people who sustained minor injuries.

One eyewitness described the chaotic scenes after hearing a 'loud bang', that saw people frantically run over to the double-decker bus and check nobody was trapped underneath, before local store staff got water and tissues for those involved.

Stagecoach later confirmed it was one of their vehicles involved and that they would be assisting emergency services with their ongoing investigations.

Justyn Waby told the Manchester Evening News: "I was in Sainsbury's and there was a sudden loud bang, so quite a few of us quickly ran outside. The bus had demolished half the central reservation at the crossing and taken out the traffic lights.

"The first worry was someone could've been injured because it's a busy crossing in the city centre, so people were looking underneath the bus. People on the bus were very very distressed and shaken up by it.
