A dad-of-five killed, two women injured and a young boy 'lucky to be alive': The XL bully attacks to hit Greater Manchester as breed could be banned

A dog breed at the centre of a number of high-profile attacks could soon be banned in the UK. The Home Secretary has confirmed she is seeking advice over a possible ban of the XL bully.

Suella Braverman described the breed as a 'clear and lethal danger', while opposition leader Sir Keir Starmer said there is a 'strong case' for banning it. The breed has been involved in a number of attacks in Greater Manchester this year, including the tragic death of a dad-of-five in Leigh.

Jonathan Hogg, 37, died on May 19 after being on Westleigh Lane by an XL bully, police have confirmed. The dog was destroyed at the scene after mauling Jonathan, who had five children.

Two suspects remain under investigation following the attack, Greater Manchester Police said. Jonathan's brother Ian told the Manchester Evening News following the attack: "I was in the hospital from 11pm to 5am.

Ian described his brother as 'one in a million' and a 'bubbly and loud' character, who would 'do anything for anybody'. He added: "His kids are in bits. I don't know what we're going to do."

Less than three weeks later, on June 4, a family 11-year-old Ali escaped with his life after he was mauled by a dog in Monsall, north Manchester. Emergency services raced out to Swanley Avenue after Ali, who has autism, was attacked.

The schoolboy suffered serious injuries to his face, as well as injuries to his arms and hands. Officers seized the dog, which has since been confirmed as an XL bully, and a woman was released on bail after being arrested
