Rangers shareholders were squeezed into New Edmiston House for the club’s AGM but those inside gave the top table plenty of wiggle room on a day when they were expected to feel the heat on a chilly morning in Glasgow.

The Ibrox club made the most of their state-of-the-art event facility as they used it to host the annual meeting but despite moving from the SEC Armadillo across the River Clyde there was a pantomime feel to all with plenty of laughter. Oh yes there was! Even hairless new boss Philippe Clement got in on the act when he made a quip about having a conversation with his barber. There are some serious matters to be addressed at Rangers right now such as the failure to win any trophies last season as fierce rivals Celtic hoovered up another Treble and yet another managerial change. But you would hardly have known it.

The incredible backing of Michael Beale in the summer that then saw the Englishman axed just a couple of month into the season – leaving successor Clement lumbered with expensive recruits such as Sam Lammers and Cyriel Dessers – wasn’t really on the agenda. Instead, many more – trivial in the eyes of the majority of punters – issues were brought up. And the top table and floor exchanged a few jibes along the way on what turned out to be a bit of a playful morning. In fact, maybe chief executive James Bisgrove missed a trick in not charging an entry fee for the entertainment.
