£51m release clause: Ashworth already eyeing 'superb' gem for Newcastle

Newcastle United are interested in signing FC Porto goalkeeper Diogo Costa, according to a report from Portuguese newspaper Jornal de Notícias (via Sport Witness).

Brought up in the famed Porto academy, Costa has already made 146 appearances across all levels for the Portuguese giants despite his tender years.

Only 22-years-old, the fully-fledged senior Portugal international made a first-team debut in 2019 against Boavista and has since amassed 68 senior outings for the illustrious club.

Under contract until 2026 (Transfermarkt), Newcastle could now be preparing an audacious attempt to bring the young stopper to the Premier League.

As per Jornal de Notícias, translated by SW, Newcastle are ready to ‘really advance for the signing’ this summer.

It’s claimed that officials at St James’ Park have Costa ‘very well referenced’, having been attentive to the three-cap star’s talents for some time.

Possessing a €60million (£51million) release clause, it’s believed newly appointed transfer chief Dan Ashworth would need to bid at least €40million (£31million) for Porto to even consider a sale of the goalkeeper hailed by journalist Zach Lowy for a ‘superb’ display against Benfica.

After previously nailed on number one choice Martin Dubravka succumbed to a series of regular lengthy injury absences, the gloves have been somewhat of a poisoned chalice at Newcastle.

Karl Darlow took over the mantle for a short period but inconsistent performances soon led Dubravka back into the fold under Eddie Howe. Aged 33 and 31 respectively, it’s no surprise that Howe would be looking for a long-term alternative to both Dubravka and Darlow.

Overall during 2021/22, Costa kept 15 clean sheets and saved 69.7 per cent of the shots taken against him
