50 Cent, Human League & scoring goals - Why Steven Gerrard will be buzzing about Cameron Archer

It took all of 12 minutes for Cameron Archer to fire home his first Championship goal for Preston North End - and it just had to be against West Brom.

The 20-year-old is currently averaging a goal every other game, or thereabouts, after his four strikes from his nine appearances (six starts) under Ryan Lowe at Deepdale.

The Walsall youngster's tally stands at 14 from 17 senior appearances in all competitions this season after exploding onto the scene under previous Villa manager Dean Smith back in the summer.

As for Steven Gerrard, he was asked about Archer prior to his loan switch, and said: "He knows what I think of him and what we think of him, a player with huge potential who's got a bright future, but he needs to keep proving himself because he's got a lot of stiff competition in that area."

Here's how Archer's getting on...

A breath of fresh air. Ryan Lowe was extremely confident that Archer would score goals when he fought off competition to land him in January and he hasn't been let down. He's scored a range of goals and could've had more than his four in nine. Archer has all the hallmarks of a born goal-scorer, a really natural centre-forward.

But PNE certainly don't carry him in games - he holds his own, won't be bullied and is intelligent in possession too. When the ball falls to him in the 18-yard box, you're kind of just waiting for the net to bulge and North End haven't had someone like that for a while.

Two things - his strength and unselfishness. He uses his body so well back to goal and will look after the ball as if his life depends on it.
