3 reasons why Middlesbrough securing transfer swoop for 32-y/o target would make little sense

Middlesbrough are expected to have a very busy summer as Chris Wilder looks to put his mark on the team ahead of his first full season in charge.

The 54-year-old has done a fine job since taking over from Neil Warnock, even if Boro ultimately fell short as they pushed for a promotion push this season.

Now, the focus is on recruitment, and reports have suggested that Wilder could look to bring Huddersfield Town’s Jordan Rhodes to the club.

A deal would be highly unlikely if the Terriers win promotion this weekend, but if not, it may be possible.

And, whilst the experienced striker has shown he has a lot to offer this season, scoring some crucial goals for the Yorkshire side, a return to Teesside would be a risk. Here we look at THREE reasons why the transfer would make little sense…

He’s not a long term option

Firstly, at 32, Rhodes isn’t someone who has his best years in front of him and he would have little re-sale value if Boro did bring him in, which would not appeal to the hierarchy at the club.

You should never only sign young players, but it’s clear that strategy is needed to try and get Boro out of the Premier League, so Rhodes wouldn’t really fit in to the way the club should want to go.

He’s not the prolific scorer they need

Most importantly, this is a position that Boro desperately need to address, with the lack of a clinical finisher the main reason they failed to finish in the top six.

So, identifying a goalscorer will be the priority and there’s nothing to suggest Rhodes can be the 15-20 goal a season man they need.

Even this season at Huddersfield, he’s managed just four, with many appearances from the bench admittedly. Going back further, he hasn’t hit double figures since the 15/16 campaign.

The
