When Ruben Amorim names his first Manchester United starting XI on Sunday at Ipswich Town, he is expected to pivot to his favoured 3-4-3 formation.

But who lines up at left-wing-back will be very interesting, given both Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia are working back from long-term injuries. Diogo Dalot has played at left-back all season and could be used in a left-wing-back role if neither player prove their fitness.

But the long term reliability of United's two recognised left-backs has been called into question given they have had to operate without either player since February. As such, there is talk United could look to strengthen their options in that department and Benfica's Alvaro Fernandez Carreras has emerged as an option to return to the club.

The Spanish defender left Old Trafford to join the Portuguese giants for £6million in the summer and has quickly established himself as an important player at the Estadio Da Luz, despite some initial suspicion.

"With a mixture of cautious optimism and suspicion," Alfredo Fumacas of the Benfica Podcast told the Manchester Evening News when asked about the initial reception around Benfica when they signed the Spanish under-21 international.

"Alejandro Grimaldo who joined Benfica midseason during the 2015/16 season provided consistency to a position which, up until that point, was a bit of a revolving door between inconsistency and players who just weren't at the level required.

"Grimaldo was able to secure the starting spot, and remained a staple of championship Benfica teams
