2022 Comrades | 88.6% of runners crossed finish line at gruelling ultra-marathon

Of the 13 213 runners that took part in the 2022 Comrades Marathon on Sunday, 11 709 managed to make it to the finish of this year's down-run.

South Africa's Tete Dijana won the men's race in a time of 05:30:38, while Russia's Alexandra Morozova won the women's race, stopping the clock at 6:17:48.

Of those 341, 221 were checked at the main medical facility, while the other 120 received minor treatment, including R&R, rubdowns, strapping and massages at the St. John's Tent.

A total of 82 patients needed to be treated in hospital, of which 28 were sent from the medical facility at the finish while the rest were taken from the race route.

A total of 19 patients had to undertake a hospital stay, of which seven were in ICU, although by Tuesday, all remaining runners who were hospitalised were soon to be discharged.

Sadly, there were two confirmed deaths from the race.

The CMA implemented extensive medical, emergency, first aid and physiotherapy provisions for runners on race day. Provided by Netcare 911 and Ampath Laboratories, these much-needed medical amenities are made available at strategic positions along the route and at the finish.

Speaking on Tuesday, Boulter said the majority of the runners attended to at the medical facility suffered from dehydration and exhaustion.

"The Comrades Marathon is a tough race. The aim of our extensive medical provisions is to allow us to help a runner in just about any medical
