2 winners and 2 losers at the Italian Grand Prix

Max Verstappen took another step towards glory in his march to the 2022 world title at the Italian Grand Prix on Sunday afternoon.

The Dutchman can now win the championship in Singapore next time out at the start of October, though it is perhaps more likely we’ll see him do that in either Japan or the US later in the month.

Time will tell, but it was another fine weekend for him to remember in the meantime as he stood atop one of the best podiums in motorsport at Monza.

What a weekend in the end for Nyck de Vries.

He drove in FP1 for Aston Martin on Friday afternoon and was firmly under the impression, as everyone else was, that he’d be done for on-track action for the rest of the weekend at the conclusion of that session.

However, Alex Albon was hit with appendicitis on Saturday morning and so De Vries was called upon, with him jumping in the car for FP3 and then qualifying, which saw him go faster than Nicholas Latifi in the other Williams to line up ahead of him for the race.

De Vries would then keep his nose clean in his debut Grand Prix to earn two points at Monza, and do his chances of being in F1 more permanently next year a world of good after beating his team-mate on Sunday as well.

Aston Martin will be glad to pack up the motorhome and get out of here.

The team has actually had a decent enough triple header. They earned points in Spa and Zandvoort and have looked a bit more involved in the midfield fight of late than they were at the start of the season.
