2,600 athletes vie for medals as MTN Season 2 Champs begin in Ibadan

More than 2,600 youths are participating in the Season 2 of the MTN Champs, which began in Ibadan on Friday. It is the second leg of Nigeria’s premier Schools’ Athletics Championships, which began in Asaba early this year.

The event is an initiative and a dynamic platform by MTN Nigeria that nurtures competitive spirit in young athletes across four distinct age categories: Cadet (U14), Youth (U17), Junior (U20), and the newly introduced Senior (no age limit).

Speaking in Ibadan at the weekend, the General Manager, Segment and Devices, MTN, Idowu Adesokan, said the initiative was borne out of the need to meet dreams and aspirations of young Nigerians, who intend to marry athletes with their education.

In his remark, the founder, Making of Champions (MOC), Bambo Akanni, lauded the state government for its effort towards uplifting sporting activities in the state.

He stated that with the event, Nigeria has begun to wake up as a sporting nation, adding that MTN Champswill assist the nation in rediscovering its placeas one of the top three athletics nations in Africa.

Akanni described the event as a nation-building and life-changing exercise for kids, saying one of the aims of the event is to support Nigeria’s core values and make the nation’sfuture at the Olympics brighter.

Also speaking at the event, Oyo State’s Commissioner for Youth and Sport, Wasilat Adegoke, commended MTN’s commitment to the socio-economic emancipation of youths across the country, adding that it would bring opportunities to young Oyo children, who would not have gotten access or capacity to be trained or discovered without the kind of platform presented by MTN.
