'18 months max' prediction made as Tyson Fury retirement doubted

Tyson Fury has announced that he is retiring from boxing, making the move in a short Instagram video weeks after a loss to Oleksandr Usyk - but Manchester Evening News readers in our comments section doubt that it's the last we've seen of this Fury brother.

'The Gypsy King' has had a successful career in professional boxing, retiring for the second time with a record of 34 wins from 37 fights. 24 of those were knockout victories.

The most notable marks against his record are two losses to Usyk in the past two years, the last coming in Saudi Arabia in December 2024 by unanimous decision. Fury's bout with Deontay Wilder in 2018 ended in a split draw, though he's had his revenge in two rematches since then.

In a video uploaded to his Instagram account, Fury, 36, said, "Hi everybody. I'm gonna make this short and sweet. I'd like to announce my retirement from boxing. It's been a blast. I've loved every single minute of it, and I'm gonna end with this. Dick Turpin wore a mask."

Richard 'Dick' Turpin was a highwayman during the 18th century who infamously wore a mask to conceal his identity.

"God bless everybody," Fury signed off. "See you on the other side," before shouting: "Get up!"

Few believe that Fury's Instagram video spells the end to his boxing career. Reader Wiganman writes: “A very wise decision. But I doubt Tyson will stick to being retired.” Bernardmoaning says: “He'll make more comebacks than Elton John and will look equally stupid.”
