0.7 shots on target per game: Is this West Brom player worth keeping beyond this season?

Carroll had spent the first half of the season with relegation battling Reading. 

But following the expiration of his contract with the Royals, West Brom added him to their squad as they tried to push for a play-off place.

It hasn’t quite worked out for the Baggies overall, with Steve Bruce having arrived as the club’s new manager in February.

With only one win in six since Bruce’s appointment, West Brom have dropped to 13th in the table and are now eight points adrift of the top six. 

During his stint with Reading, Carroll managed only eight appearances for the club, with six of those coming from the start.

In that time, Carroll scored two goals as the club struggled to gain any traction in their relegation battle.

But since joining West Brom, Carroll is still yet to get off the mark for his new club.

In seven appearances, Carroll has yet to score or assist a goal which has contributed to the team’s poor run of form. 

According to Sofascore, Carroll is only managing 0.7 shots on target per game, from a total of 2.0 shots per 90, which is quite poor for a player of his experience.

Carroll generally has struggled with fitness concerns throughout his career and hasn’t managed to play more than 2,000 league minutes in a single campaign since the 2011-12 season with Liverpool.

In fact, it’s not since the 2016-17 season that Carroll even managed to hit the 1,000 minutes mark. 

This is quite concerning and doesn’t speak to the striker being a good long-term solution for the club.

When Daryl Dike pulled up with a hamstring injury it left West Brom short in that department, so it made a lot of sense to bring Carroll in on a short-term deal as they waited for Dike to get back to full fitness.
