Sony and Zee - all four major broadcasters and potential bidders to pick the International Cricket Council (ICC) media rights for the India market later this month - stayed away from the mock-auction process on Wednesday. TOI can confirm that all the four broadcasters made it a point to not attend the mock auction in order to take a stand on the processes that the ICC has put in place to carry out this bidding process.
Indian Premier League (IPL). Up for grabs are broadcast rights for 50-over World Cups, T20 World Cups and the restructured Champions Trophies for the India markets, both television and digital. The ICC hasn't set a base price for Round One of bidding.
Indra Nooyi, the only female representative in the ICC's Board of Directors, has decided to recuse herself from the upcoming sale of its media rights process as she is also a member of potential digital rights bidder Amazon's board. The ICC's TV and digital rights bundle for the Indian sub-continent will be up for sale with sealed tenders being submitted on August 22.
Indra Nooyi, the former chairperson at PepsiCo, who is currently serving as an independent director at the International Cricket Council (ICC), also happens to be on the board of Amazon and the company's audit committee as the retail-to-content conglomerate prepares to submit a bid for media rights of cricket's global events. In February 2018, Nooyi was appointed to the ICC board as the organization's first independent female director. In February 2019, she became the newest member to Amazon's 11-member board of directors. Consequently, she was also named to the audit committee of Amazon's board.
There's been enough chatter already on the bid process being "too convoluted" and "lacking transparency". But what exactly are these complications? Here's a FAQ detailing the entire process. What: Bidding for all ICC events for either four or eight years.
cricket broadcasters - Disney, Viacom18, Sony and Zee - who participated in the e-auction for media rights of the Indian Premier League (IPL) have written to the International Cricket Council (ICC), letting the governing body of the game know that the current tender document does not encourage them to submit a bid. All four broadcasters have the same reasons for writing to the ICC - absolute lack of clarity on the process - and have indicated (not verbatim) that they may not turn up at the bidding table. Ugliness, along with some potential for future litigation and quite a bit of antagonism enveloped the air this week after the ICC sent out a huge list of clarifications to the broadcasters, answering their questions in detail, but not making any major changes to the tender process.
The Big Ten is close to finalizing a new media rights agreement that will add CBS and NBC to the league's lineup while ending a long partnership with ESPN, according to sources.
