Crashing out of the group stage of this past summer's FIFA Women's World Cup wasn't the result the Canadian national soccer team imagined for themselves.
LONDON: Players from the England women’s team appear to have reached an agreement with the country’s soccer federation regarding a dispute over bonuses and commercial structures. England captain Millie Bright said at a news conference on Thursday that the players “feel really confident moving forward about the structure we now have in place” with the Football Association. Exact details of the agreement have yet to be officially announced. In a statement released before the recent Women’s World Cup in Australia, the England squad expressed disappointment at the dispute having not been resolved before the tournament and said the players had decided to pause talks with the intention of revisiting them. Players from teams at the World Cup were due to receive individual payments directly from FIFA for the first time, ranging from $30,000 to $270,00 depending on what stage of the tournament they reached. England players didn’t receive any payments from the FA, reportedly because the governing body perceived payments coming from FIFA to be enough. There is also believed to be frustration over a commercial strategy which players feel limits their ability to earn extra money from sponsorship. “We’ve had a really good conversation with the FA,” Bright said.
The Indian contingent started their Asian Games 2023 campaign on a somewhat positive note with good results in rowing and a brilliant win over by South Korea in the men's volleyball match. It is now turn of the Indian women's cricket team as they will play their first match against Malaysia on Thursday. This is the first time that cricket was included in Asian Games and the fans will be excited to see the team in action. The men's Indian football team will aim to bounce back from their heavy loss against China when they face Bangladesh in the second group stage match. The women's football team, on the other hand, will play their first game against Taipei.
An undermanned New York Giants offense that will be without Saquon Barkley faces the San Francisco 49ers (-10, 44.5) at Levi's Stadium on Thursday night.
The Indian football team rode on a late Sunil Chhetri strike to beat Bangladesh by a solitary goal and stay alive for a place in the knockouts of the Asian Games on Thursday. The 39-year-old veteran scored from the spot in the 85th minute to help his team earn full points after the 1-5 hammering at the hands of hosts China on Tuesday. The Bangladesh goalkeeper dived the right way but could not do anything against Chhetri's fabulous knock from the spot as the ball went past him. India were awarded the penalty after a foul Bangladesh captain Rahmat following a long ball to Bryce Miranda at the edge of the box.
There was reputed applause in the home dressing room at Old Trafford while Brighton celebrated in their sanctuary across the tunnel.
The Indian men's football team finally opened their account in Asian Games 2023 with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Bangladesh on Thursday. The Sunil Chhetri-led side started their campaign with a devastating 1-5 loss against China but things were much better against Bangladesh as they controlled major portions of the game. It was Chhetri who proved to be the hero once again for the side as he converted a penalty late in the game to hand India the victory. After the match, he lauded the side for the result but was disappointed with how they attacked and failed to convert major chances.
It remains to be seen whether Pep Guardiola will go through with his promise of fielding youth players in the Carabao Cup or whether it was press conference bluster.
