Asked how much of a setback it is for Finland to have Sweden left out of NATO for now, Tuppurainen responds: "It was our priority to enter NATO together. We started this process hand in hand and Sweden is our closest partner. It would have benefited NATO the most to have us both entering simultaneously. But here we are, in a different situation. This was not our choice. And we have to be humble, as applicant states. But since it looks like Finland is going to be in NATO before Sweden, then of course Finland will try to help Sweden to also join as soon as possible."
"The pension age cannot be the same for everybody […] There has to be a criteria of hardship taken into account." For Schmit, the French government's reforms to the pension age cannot be a one-size-fits-all solution. The EU's Commissioner for Jobs and Social Rights said any raising of the retirement age must go hand-in-hand with programmes to ensure that people at the end of their careers do have realistic employment opportunities. "If you want people to work longer, you have to prepare them to work longer. That’s about working conditions, investing in their skills, they might evolve and change the way they work. If you consider that someone might work the same way when they are 20 as when they are 64, then this is not realistic."
'"The EU has not produced a cohesive asylum and migration policy, and this is one of the historic failures of the EU," Schinas tells Armen Georgian. "We've had to work as firefighters, running from one crisis to another. Now the time has come to produce this big agreement. We need to build a house with three floors. The first is relations with countries of origin and transit countries. We'll never be able to manage internally unless we manage externally. The second floor is border management. That means a more collective system for protecting our external border, and uniform border procedures for all member states. And the third floor is the solidarity floor; burden-sharing, across all 27 member states."
