Tiny chips, big impact: The challenge of diversifying semiconductor supply chains

This is currently on display in the European Union with the CHIPS act voted earlier this year. It awards €50 billion in subsidies to the industry in a bid to double the number of chips made on the continent by 2030 and return the EU to 20 percent of global production.

EU ban on Russian cars: A sanction custom-made for Putin's propagandists?

Russia's foreign ministry slammed the move as "racist". Anti-Putin activists, meanwhile, fear the EU's measure could backfire by punishing Russian opponents of the war, while fuelling Kremlin propaganda. The row is also raising broader questions about whether sanctions against Russia can sometimes go too far. We delve into what's at stake with two MEPs.

'We'll take a strong stance on any forced displacement': EU's Borrell on Nagorno-Karabakh

On the Azerbaijani military offensive to retake the disputed enclave of Nagorno-Karabakh – populated by ethnic Armenians but internationally recognised as part of Azerbaijan – Borrell says he has "strongly warned about any kind of forced displacement of persons or population, about any kind of [ethnic] cleansing. Certainly, if this happens, the European Union will have to take a strong stance. We have condemned the military action of Azerbaijan and we will condemn anything that could look like forced displacement of persons and any kind of activities against them based on ethnic reasons."

'If Europe wants long-term security, it needs to enlarge': EU Commissioner Várhelyi

Várhelyi insists that there has been a new approach to EU enlargement since the war in Ukraine: “We've seen that with the war of aggression of Russia against Ukraine, there's a clear rethinking about enlargement being a priority,” he says. “I think by now it is clear for everyone in Europe, not only for the leaders but also for the general public, that if Europe wants to ensure its long-term security and prosperity, it will need to enlarge, and it will need to have a larger population coming under the same values and creating the same area for everyone in a Europe of peace, stability and security. Now, if you want to look at the State of the Union speech in that context, I think this speech paved the way for how to achieve this, as a mid-term or even short-term reality.”

Post-Brexit UK should 'sleep together with Europe': Ex-EU Commissioner Lamy

"Europe has to exercise influence where it is united and it is united in economic and trade matters," Lamy asserts. "We have our own attitude vis-a-vis China, which is a political rivalry, but an economic interdependence. And most Europeans do not believe we should do with China what the US is doing, which is trying to isolate China. Isolating China is not the way to go. If you make China more autarkic, China will be more dangerous than what it is. So there are differences, and I think the EU has in a way to play its own game in this very complex world."

Regional security 'deteriorating', says Lithuania's president

Having recently called Wagner troops "serial killers", Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda calls for strengthened security on the Belarusian border. "As I understand, the plan of Lukashenko is to build the necessary infrastructure for 6,000 Wagner fighters. And then the most important question is what’s next?" Nausėda adds: "Nobody knows if it's possible to integrate those fighters again into the regular army of the Russian Federation because of the gap in salaries. So they might be used in Africa, they might be used to strengthen the Belarusian army."
