The 2022 Winter Olympics have been offering a variety of ice-cold sports entertainment, with some of the very best athletes in the world competing for Olympic glory.
Curling at Beijing 2022 had it all. New countries emerged to take on the usual world order, a first-ever extra end in a men’s Olympic final to decide the gold medal, and Team GB secured their only medals of the Games – a gold and a silver – in the sport.
BEIJING :Eve Muirhead and her rink screamed in delight after leading Britain to their first gold medal of the Beijing Games by soaring to a sensational 10-3 victory over Japan in the women's curling final on Sunday.
Eve Muirhead can be considered as one of curling’s greatest ever skips after guiding Team GB to women’s curling gold at the Winter Olympics, according to her counterpart Bruce Mouat. At her fourth Olympics, the 31-year-old made up for previous heartbreak at the Games by securing her rink a dominant win over Japan in the Beijing final. Ad/> Mouat was watching on in the Ice Cube after an emotional few days, having won silver in the men’s competition and been told he had been selected as Great Britain’s flagbearer for the closing ceremony.
Men’s curling silver medallist Bruce Mouat has been chosen to be Great Britain’s flagbearer in the Beijing Winter Olympics closing ceremony.
Bruce Mouat says having the honour of being Team GB’s flagbearer for the closing ceremony of the Winter Olympics will be the “proudest moment” of his life, capping a whirlwind few days for the silver medal winning men’s curling skip. Mouat was in the Ice Cube to watch Eve Muirhead guide the women’s rink to gold by thrashing Japan in the final, less than 24 hours after an agonising defeat by Sweden in a match which went to an extra end. Ad/> Not long after, Mouat was told by Great Britain's Chef de Mission Georgie Harland that he had been chosen to carry the Union flag into the closing ceremony and he says it capped a rollercoaster day.
The last British curling gold at the Winter Olympics came 20 years ago in Salt Lake City — “what took them so long?!” joked the skip who guided them to that victory, after Eve Muirhead’s rink topped the podium in Beijing. Rhona Howie, better known by her previous name, Rhona Martin, has described Team GB’s dominant win over Japan as “phenomenal” for the sport in the UK.
Eve Muirhead paid tribute to her fellow team members after Great Britain swept to their first Olympic curling gold medal since Rhona Martin’s historic triumph in 2002.
