PCI President Devendra Jhajharia Hails Growing Support For Para-Athletes Ahead Of Paris 2024

Paralympic Committee of India (PCI) president Devendra Jhajharia said that the support given to para-athletes in recent times with many corporates stepping in to assist the players has given a huge boost to the morale of the athletes. India is set to field its largest-ever contingent for the Paralympics, with 84 athletes competing in 12 sports, including archery, athletics, badminton, canoeing, cycling, blind judo, powerlifting, rowing, shooting, swimming, table tennis, and taekwondo. The games commence on August 28 and promise to showcase the exceptional talents and dedication of India's para-athletes.

Indian Athletes Accorded Grand Send-Off Ahead Of Paralympics Games

The Indian paralympic contingent was on Friday accorded a grand send-off ahead of the Paris Games scheduled to be held from August 28 to September 8. The Paralympic Committee of India (PCI) and Sports Authority of India (SAI) hosted the ceremony for the Indian team comprising 84 athletes across 12 disciplines, including archery, athletics, badminton, canoeing, cycling, blind judo, powerlifting, rowing, shooting, swimming, table tennis, and taekwondo. "Our para athletes have a remarkable ability to overcome obstacles and turn challenges into opportunities. They have shown remarkable determination and perseverance in their preparation for the Paris Paralympics 2024," Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya said in a release.

Indian doubles badminton specialist Ashwini Ponnappa on Tuesday said she received little to no individual financial assistance from the sports ministry in the build up to Paris Olympics and even her request for a coach was turned down ahead of the just-concluded Games. The Sports Authority of India (SAI) had come out with a document, detailing the financial support provided to the Paris-bound Indian athletes. It mentions that Ashwini was provided Rs 4,50,000 under TOPS and Rs 1,48,04,080 under Annual calendar for Training and Competition (ACTC), which included the procurement of Game Ready recovery equipment, international competitions and sparring partner in the Tokyo cycle.
