The number of people in hospital in England with flu or norovirus is continuing to rise, with health chiefs warning that levels are likely to increase further as winter sets in. New figures have been published as part of the weekly snapshot of how the NHS in England is performing this winter.
Rebecca Welch will become the first female referee in the Premier League when she takes charge of the match between Fulham and Burnley on Dec. 23, the competition said Thursday.
There are "severe delays" after a collision on the A470 near the site of the fire in Treforest Industrial Estate, with both lanes closed and traffic held
Veteran opener David Warner hammered a gritty 164 to silence the critics and steer Australia to 346-5 against an inconsistent Pakistan attack in the first Test at Perth on Thursday. The 37-year-old batted for much of day one before finally departing to Aamer Jamal, two balls after smashing the debutant for six. At stumps, Mitchell Marsh was unbeaten on 15 and Alex Carey not out 14. Pakistan have never won a Test series in Australia and have failed to win a Test in the country since 1995, with Shan Masood's side again facing a daunting task.
Karim Benzema's Al Ittihad secured progress from the first round of the Club World Cup with a convincing 3-0 win against Auckland City on Tuesday. Backed by a full house at home in Jeddah, Saudi Pro League champions Al Ittihad made short work of New Zealand's Auckland City, winners of the OFC Champions League. Brazilian Romarinho, N'Golo Kante and Benzema scored in the first half to book their team's place in the second round, where they will face Al Ahly of Egypt on Friday. The Saudi side made their dominance pay on 29 minutes when a clearance came invitingly onto Romarinho, whose firm strike glanced off an Auckland defender leaving the 'keeper stranded.
Senior pacer Mohammed Shami, who is recovering from an ankle injury, is racing against time to be fit for the Test series against South Africa, starting at Centurion on December 26. Though Shami was included in the Test squad that was announced on November 30, the 33-year-old's availability was subjected to his recovery after the treatment. In that context, PTI understands that Shami might not board the flight to South Africa along with other members of the Test squad such as captain Rohit Sharma, senior batter Virat Kohli, fellow pacer Jasprit Bumrah and others. They are scheduled to fly out to Johannesburg on Friday.
Eddie Howe is hoping for a "magical European night" as Newcastle try to reach the last 16 of the Champions League on Wednesday. Newcastle must win at home to AC Milan and overcome a deepening injury crisis to have any chance of progress. Even victory over the seven-time European champions may not be enough for the Magpies to remain in the Champions League as they would still drop into the Europa League should Paris Saint-Germain win at Borussia Dortmund. Defeat, meanwhile, would ensure Newcastle finished bottom of Group F, which would represent a hugely disappointing return from a campaign that featured an impressive 4-1 defeat of Paris Saint-Germain.
