BEIJING : Kamila Valieva delivered a flawless short programme to put the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC) in the lead before the final phase of the figure skating team event at the Beijing Olympics on Sunday.
The 2022 Beijing Olympics kicked off Friday morning with the opening ceremonies — and despite the questions and concerns surrounding the host country, the athletes participating are some of the most compelling Olympians to ever hit the ice and snow. With both legends and up-and-comers set to take center stage, here's who you'll want to watch over the next two weeks:
Nathan Chen has explained some of the core traits needed to become an Olympic figure skater, stressing the “inherently athletic” nature of the sport. A three-time world champion and bronze medallist in the team event at Pyeongchang 2018, the Team USA star is going for gold in the men’s singles this time around and is among the favourites to top the podium. Ad/> Skating in the team event, however, Chen has already left his mark on these Games.
Nathan Chen got his Winter Olympics off to a perfect start in Beijing, winning the team event men’s short programme to put the US on top of the standings at the end of day one. The triple world champion scored 111.71 points to easily take victory and was only 0.11 points short of the world record set by his rival, Yuzuru Hanyu — who is yet to compete at the Games.
