Netherlands' star all-rounder Bas de Leede did all he could, but Pakistan put up an improved bowling effort to pick up an 81-run victory in their World Cup opener in Hyderabad on Friday. De Leede took four wickets with his medium-pace as a resolute Netherlands limited Pakistan to 286 all out in 49 overs. The Dutch were in the run chase till opener Vikramjit Singh (52 off 67) and de Leede (67 off 68) were in the middle but the end of their 70-run stand for the third wicket led to their downfall. They were eventually bowled out for 205 in 41 overs.
For the first time in the history of the tournament, West Indies will take no part in the ICC Cricket World Cup. Giant killers Netherlands take their place in the main draw after winning the tournament in Zimbabwe earlier this year. Netherlands will play their opening match against Pakistan in Hyderabad on Friday. The Dutch have only ever won two matches at the World Cup since their maiden appearance in 1996. Their hopes will rest largely on all-rounders Bas de Leede and Logan van Beek, key performers at the qualifiers.
The Cricket World Cup, which starts in India on October 5, will bring together the cream of the white ball world. The crowds will hurry to watch established stars like Ben Stokes, Virat Kohli and Trent Boult but they will also be on the lookout for the new generation of players to emerge from the tournament. Dhananjaya de Silva hit a career-best 93 while Maheesh Theekshana took three important wickets to ensure Sri Lanka's pole position in the Super Six leg of the ICC ODI World Cup qualifiers in Bulawayo on Friday. Sri Lanka now have six points from three games and are likely to finish among top two and qualify for the October 5 to November 19 tournament proper in India. On the day, Dhananjaya's 111-ball knock studded with eight fours and two sixes helped Sri Lanka recover from 96 for six to post a below-par 213 in 47.4 overs.
Two-time champions West Indies face an almighty task to qualify for the Cricket World Cup after losing to the Netherlands in a thrilling final group game decided by a super over Monday. Nicholas Pooran's second hundred of the qualifiers propelled West Indies to a commanding 374-6, but Teja Nidamanuru hit 111 in reply and the Dutch needed one from the final ball for victory. Jason Holder took a brilliant catch to deny Logan van Beek as the scores finished tied, but Van Beek blasted Holder for 30 runs in the super over to set up a remarkable win in Harare. He hit 4, 6, 4, 6, 6, 4 on successive deliveries.
