The 2022 Tour de France is set for a dramatic final mountain duel between Tadej Pogacar and Jonas Vingegaard in Stage 18, with the Col d’Aubisque, Col de Spandelles and summit finish at Hautacam offering the possibility of a dramatic late twist in the Pyrenees.
PEYRAGUDES, France: Defending champion Tadej Pogacar won stage 17 of the Tour de France in the Pyrenees on Wednesday, but was once again shadowed over the line by overall leader in Jumbo-Visma’s Jonas Vingegaard.
It’s not as if Ineos Grenadiers didn’t try. Tom Pidcock was sniffing around the early moves during the fast and frantic start to Stage 17 while Dylan van Baarle, second time lucky, got himself into the breakaway alongside Dani Martinez. Jonathan Castroviejo even tried to bridge over on the first of four climbs, the Col d’Aspin, giving Geraint Thomas three men up the road.
Tadej Pogacar may have failed to make significant ground on Jonas Vingegaard on Wednesday, but he has another chance to make a big impact on Stage 18. The 143.2km route from Lourdes to Hautacam represents an absolutely crucial day of racing for the Slovenian to haul in his rival, and the Breakaway team made it abundantly clear that he must give everything he has left.

Tadej Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates) roared to a thrilling Stage 17 victory on Wednesday, but Eurosport's experts have said he now needs to throw everything he has left at Jonas Vingegaard's (Jumbo-Visma) overall lead if he is to claim Tour de France glory once more. Pogacar, who is seeking a third-successive triumph at the Tour this year, still trails Vingegaard by 2'18" in the general classification ahead of the all-important Stage 18 on Thursday despite his heroics on Stage 17.
