Babar Azam, Mohammad Rizwan and Shaheen Shah Afridi have been slotted in Category A of both the newly-announced white-ball as well as red-ball contracts by the Pakistan Cricket Board, PCB announced on Thursday. The contract will come into effect from Friday, July 1. The PCB has introduced separate red and white-ball contracts, while four more players have been added to the Emerging Category. This means a total of 33 players, 13 more than the previous season, have received contracts for the next 12 months.
Previously, top players were offered one contract and could be called on to play any version of the game, but specialisation has made this out of fashion for many cricketing nations. "These contracts are part of our vision and strategy to identify, groom and develop specialists for the traditional and purist format of the game," chief selector Mohammad Wasim told press conference.
Left-arm paceman Shaheen Shah Afridi has been the toast of Pakistan cricket for a while now. He became the first Pakistani cricketer to receive the honour of ICC Cricketer of the year in 2021 due to his magnificent performances across all formats of the game. Afridi was one of the stars of Pakistan's famous win over India in last year's ICC T20 World Cup and was an integral part of the team that reached the semi-finals of the tournament.
Imam-ul-Haq continued his rich vein of form as he scored his seventh successive scores of fifty or more during the third Pakistan-West Indies ODI in Multan on Sunday. In reaching the 50-run mark, Imam became only the second cricketer to score more than six straight half-centuries in ODIs. However, Pakistan cricket team captain Babar Azam, who had scored his sixth successive half-century, fell for just 1 and missed out on a record. Pakistan have already sealed the three-ODI series after winning the first two ODIs. Imam, who was out for 62 in the third ODI, had scores of 56, 103, 106, 89, 65 and 72 in the earlier matches. Imam has now surpassed Mark Waugh, Gordon Greenidge, Andrew Jones, Mohammad Yusuf, Chris Gayle, Shai Hope, Paul Stirling, Ross Taylor and Kane Williamson in the elite list of batters with 6 straight 50-plus scores in ODIs. Pakistan batting legend Javed Miandad holds the record for the most consecutive 50-plus scores in ODIs. He had 9 straight score of 50-plus in the year 1987.
Virat Kohli has arguably been the best batter the world has seen in recent times, breaking numerous batting records on his way to superstardom. However, his performances in the last couple of years have dipped a bit and at the same time a new contender for the best batter has emerged -- Babar Azam. The Pakistan captain has been a run-scoring spree in recent times, notching records with each passing game. It's only natural that people make comparisons between the two batters. Babar Azam's Pakistan teammate Shaheen Shah Afridi was also asked to pick one between the two in a video posted on ESPNcricinfo.
Shaheen Shah Afridi has developed a habit of giving Pakistan early breakthroughs, especially in the limited-overs formats. In the second ODI against West Indies, the left-arm pacer delivered in the very first over of the visitors' chase as he dismissed the in-form Shai Hope for just four runs. Shaheen bowled five in-swingers on the trot to Hope, who had scored a brilliant century in the first ODI, and the opener even flicked one away for a boundary. But then, the pacer moved the final delivery away from Hope and the opener could only give the cover fielder a simple catch as he was caught at the crease without any foot movement.
Babar Azam and opener Imam-ul-Haq hit steady half centuries before spinner Mohammad Nawaz recorded his best figures as Pakistan beat the West Indies by 120 runs in the second ODI in Multan on Friday. Azam scored a 93-ball 77 and Haq a run-a-ball 72 -- both hitting their sixth consecutive half-centuries in successive one-day internationals -- as Pakistan made 275-8 in their 50 overs. Left-arm spinner Nawaz then achieved career best bowling figures of 4-19 as the visitors were shot out for 155 in 32.2 overs. The win gives Pakistan an unbeatable 2-0 lead in the three-match series and their 10th consecutive ODI series win over the West Indies.
