India captain Rohit Sharma on Saturday said the team has not found a finisher since the international retirement of MS Dhoni and going into next year's ODI World Cup, they are hoping to find one. Rohit was asked how he was looking at the finisher's role -- especially the No.6 and 7 in batting order -- where he admitted that they need to create more back-ups other than Hardik Pandya and Ravindra Jadeja. "Finisher's role in ODI is very important but since MS Dhoni's retirement we haven't got anyone who could fit in that role," Rohit said on the eve of the first ODI against the West Indies.

India skipper Rohit Sharma has said that it will be a privilege for him to lead the Men in Blue as they take the field to play their 1000th ODI. The side will achieve the feat in the first ODI against West Indies here at the Narendra Modi Stadium. In the 999 ODIs played earlier, India accounts for 518 wins and 431 losses. The Men in Blue had played their 500th match in 2002 and two decades later, the side has now reached the milestone of playing 1000 ODIs.
Rohit Sharma on Saturday stressed on the need to be adaptable over the next 20 months leading up to the 2023 World Cup. “There is not a lot that we need to change. We just need to adapt to different situations of the game that is being presented in front of us,” said Sharma in his maiden interaction as the full-time ODI skipper. “We have played good ODI cricket over the course of the last few years. Suddenly the loss of a series (in South Africa) doesn’t mean that there is a panic that we need to create. (There are) certain understandings and learnings that we need to take into our game... the South Africa series was a great learning for us as to what we didn’t do collectively as a team,” he added at a virtual press conference ahead of the first of the three ODIs against West Indies.

India and West Indies clash in a limited-overs series that begins with the first ODI at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Sunday. The next two ODIs will be played at the same venue on February 9 and 11. The ODIs will be followed by a three-match Twenty20 International series, the entirety of which will be held at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata, from February 16 onwards. For India, it will be a chance to right the wrongs from their time in South Africa where they were whitewashed 0-3 in the ODI series.
