Ravichandran Ashwin on Sunday went past Kapil Dev's tally of 434 wickets to become the second highest Indian wicket-taker of all-time in Test cricket. Ashwin achieved the feat by dismissing Charith Asalanka on the third day of India's opening Test against Sri Lanka in Mohali. India registered a thumping win by an innings and 222 runs after bowling out Sri Lanka for 174 and 178 in the first and second innings, respectively, having themselves declared their first innings at 574/8. Ashwin finished the Test with another wicket to take his overall Test tally to 436 scalps.
Kapil Dev retired from international cricket in 1994. Once he had surpassed Richard Hadlee's tally of 431 Test wickets, it was the envy of the cricket world till Courtney Walsh went past him in 2001. Eight bowlers have gone past Kapil since and Anil Kumble has remained India's highest Test wicket-taker for close to two decades. Ashwin took a match-haul of six for 96 in the first Test against Sri Lanka and his current tally stands at 436 wickets. "It's a big thing in his cricketing career to achieve that feat you know," Rohit said when asked about Ashwin's feat in just 85 Tests. "When you grow up wanting to play Test cricket, you don't dream about these things and so to surpass that is a big achievement on his behalf. You know, I have been watching Ashwin for a long time now and every time I watch him, he seems to get better and better.

It was a great game of cricket from our perspective. We ticked all the boxes we wanted to. To be honest I didn't think it is going to be that kind of a Test match that would get over in three days. It was a good batting pitch, there was some turn and some assistance for the seamers as well. A lot of credit to the guys, they bowled very well in tandem, kept the pressure and never made it easier for the Sri Lanka batsmen. We just ensured we applied pressure from both ends. Good signs for India cricket," said Rohit after the first Test ended.
India's premier off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin on Sunday surpassed the legendary Kapil Dev's haul of 434 wickets to become India second-highest wicket taker in Test cricket. Ashwin went past Kapil when he picked up the wicket of Charith Asalanka, his third of the second innings in Mohali in the 1st Test against Sri Lanka, as India closed in on a big win.
