Kapil Dev retired from international cricket in 1994. Once he had surpassed Richard Hadlee's tally of 431 Test wickets, it was the envy of the cricket world till Courtney Walsh went past him in 2001. Eight bowlers have gone past Kapil since and Anil Kumble has remained India's highest Test wicket-taker for close to two decades. On Sunday, R Ashwin claimed Sri Lanka's Charith Asalanka first Test to go past Kapil's tally. After finishing the second innings with figures of 4/47, he now stands at 436 wickets in 85 Tests.

Indian captain Rohit Sharma is surprised at Ravichandran Ashwin's ability to get better with time and termed him an "all-time great" after the senior off-spinner eclipsed Kapil Dev's tally of 434 wickets to become the country's second highest wicket-taker. Ashwin took a match-haul of six for 96 in the first Test against Sri Lanka and his current tally stands at 436 wickets. "It's a big thing in his cricketing career to achieve that feat you know," Rohit said when asked about Ashwin's feat in just 85 Tests. "When you grow up wanting to play Test cricket, you don't dream about these things and so to surpass that is a big achievement on his behalf. You know, I have been watching Ashwin for a long time now and every time I watch him, he seems to get better and better.

It was a good batting pitch, there was some turn and some assistance for the seamers as well. A lot of credit to the guys, they bowled very well in tandem, kept the pressure and never made it easier for the Sri Lanka batsmen. We just ensured we applied pressure from both ends. Good signs for India cricket," said Rohit after the first Test ended.

Ashwin went past Kapil when he picked up the wicket of Charith Asalanka, his third of the second innings in Mohali in the 1st Test against Sri Lanka, as India closed in on a big win.
