MUMBAI : The expanded Indian Premier League (IPL) got underway with Kolkata Knight Riders beating defending champions Chennai Super Kings by six wickets in the tournament opener on Saturday.
Kolkata Knight Riders beat defending champions Chennai Super Kings by six wickets as Mahendra Singh Dhoni's first tournament fifty in three years went in vain in the IPL lung opener here on Saturday. Unburdened by captaincy, Dhoni, who relinquished the leadership role just two days back, smashed an unbeaten 50 off 38 balls to take CSK to 131 for 5 after being put in to bat.
Chennai Super Kings batsman Mahendra Singh Dhoni bailed his team out from a precarious position with a superb 50 not out against Kolkata Knight Riders in the opening match of the IPL 2022. Dhoni added 70 runs for the sixth wicket alongwith the new skipper Ravindra Jadeja to take CSK to a respectable total of 131/5.
MS Dhoni turned the clock back at the Wankhede Stadium as he hit 7 boundaries and a six on his way to a half-century off just 38 deliveries in the opening match of IPL 2022 between CSK and KKR. This is the 24th time that Dhoni has scored a fifty in the IPL. The former CSK skipper came in to bat with the team struggling at 61/5 in 10.5 overs.
CSK vs KKR, IPL 2022, Live Updates: Chennai Super Kings find themselves in a spot of bother in the ongoing IPL 2022 match against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. CSK are four wickets down after being put on to bat first by KKR captain Shreyas Iyer. Varun Chakravarthy got the better of Robin Uthappa, after Umesh Yadav had dismissed both the CSK openers in the powerplay. Uthappa was looking lively before Chakaravarthy halted his progress. Earlier, KKR had won the toss and elected to bowl against CSK. KKR named three overseas players -- Sam Billings, Andre Russell and Sunil Narine -- in their playing XI while CSK pick four overseas players -- Devon Conway, Mitchell Santner, Dwayne Bravo, and Adam Milne. Ahead of the toss, KKR skipper Shreyas Iyer received his debut cap, alongside fellow newcomers Ajinkya Rahane and Billings. Meanwhile, Ravindra Jadeja will lead CSK this season after MS Dhoni stepped down from his role earlier this week. Both teams had met in the IPL final last season, with CSK running out victorious in the UAE. (LIVE SCORECARD)
IPL 2022 is underway with the clash between CSK and KKR and it promises to be yet another glittering tournament. CSK have a new captain in Ravindra Jadeja and the in-form all-rounder needs to lead by example, just like his predecessor MS Dhoni. Jadeja has been in excellent batting form over the past few years and cricket fans and pundits have often felt that the southpaw bats a tad too low in CSK's batting order.
Chennai Super Kings (CSK) management was wondering whether it was worth the investment they had made in Ravindra Jadeja. He couldn’t be a genuine batter, struggled to complete his four overs and it was only his fielding that kept him in the mix. But determination, hard work and perseverance helped Jadeja turn things around. Add to that MS Dhoni’s undying faith in multidimensional cricketers, and now the Saurashtra man has taken over from the old pro as the new CSK skipper. It was a decision that CSK had taken last season that they would groom Jadeja as the new skipper. The initial plan was that Dhoni would stay the skipper while Jadeja would be mentored to take over in due course. But Dhoni, during the camp in Surat, probably felt that Jadeja is ready for the job and there is no point in delaying the inevitable.
The upcoming season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) is set to begin in less than a weeks' time. Apart from the already existing eight teams, two new franchises -- Lucknow Super Giants and Gujarat Titans -- will also battle it out for the IPL trophy. While some of the teams have retained their core group of players, as well as their captain, some have decided to go with a fresh mindset this season. Three players will make their captaincy debut in this season's IPL, which starts Saturday, March 26.
