Nick Kyrgios lashed out when questioned about a frustration-fueled fling of his racquet that sent a ball boy ducking for cover on Thursday after the Australian's crushing loss to Rafael Nadal at the Indian Wells WTA and ATP Masters. Kyrgios insisted the ugly incident was barely worthy of comment, and not on the scale, for example, of ATP colleague Alexander Zverev's meltdown in Mexico, that saw the German fined $40,000 for bashing an umpire's chair with his racquet. "Did I throw my racquet anywhere near him (the ball boy) originally," Kyrgios said. "It landed a meter from my foot and skidded and nearly hit him. "I'm human. Things happen like that. It was an accident. It most definitely wasn't like Zverev. It was a complete accident. I didn't hit him, thankfully. It wasn't my intention. "So, thankfully, he's OK." Nadal and Kyrgios had already shaken hands, and the Spaniard didn't see him throw the racquet after the match.
Rafael Nadal beat Nick Kyrgios 7-6 (7/0), 5-7, 6-4 in a tumultuous quarter-final clash at the Indian Wells WTA and ATP Masters on Thursday to extend his perfect 2022 start to 19-0. Nadal, who won a record-setting 21st Grand Slam title at the Australian Open in January, notched his sixth win in nine career meetings with the mercurial Aussie, who surrendered the first set on a penalty point when a fan's shout as he prepared to serve provoked a profanity from Kyrgios -- who had already been warned for racquet abuse.
Rafael Nadal defeated Nick Kyrgios 7-6 (0), 5-7, 6-4 Thursday to reach the semifinals of the BNP Paribas Open in a match featuring obscenities, underhand serves, a point penalty and smashed rackets.

Rafael Nadal kept his cool in what proved to be a fiery contest against Nick Kyrgios in their Indian Wells quarter-final as the pair went toe-to-toe in another epic head-to-head clash. Nadal had made the most of a distracted Kyrgios to take the first set but the Australian tennis ace regained his focus to force a deciding set.
