Jay Vine (Alpecin–Deceuninck) disappeared into the mist to claim another sensational win at La Vuelta on Stage 8, as Primoz Roglic (Jumbo-Visma) stayed glued to the wheel of Remco Evenepoel (Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl) in the red jersey. Vine made his move from the breakaway with 6km remaining, decimating a group including aging stars Thibaut Pinot (Groupama–FDJ) and Mikel Landa (Bahrain Victorious).

Three-time champion Primoz Roglic (Jumbo-Visma) struggled to keep up with Evenepoel and crossed the line 80 seconds off the pace of the Belgian. Ad Next up for the riders is a 190.1km seventh stage on Friday, which will take the pack from Camargo to Cistierna.

Three-time champion Primoz Roglic (Jumbo-Visma) could not live with the pace set by Evenepoel, crossing the line with a larger group 80 seconds later. Such were the appalling conditions that TV images failed to capture Vine crossing the line – instead broadcasting a gloomy haze – before Evenepoel led home Enric Mas (Movistar).
