After a century in the second innings of the first Test against Australia in Perth, Virat Kohli's form took another dramatic turn. The talismanic batter departed after scoring just 7 runs before being dismissed in the first session of the Day 1 of the pink-ball Test in Adelaide on Friday. Kohli was found chasing a 6th-7th stump delivery bowled by Mitchell Starc, when he edged the ball into the hands of Steve Smith at second slip. The manner of Kohli's dismissal left former India cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar fuming.
Star India batter Virat Kohli was dismissed for an 8-ball 7 in the first innings of the second Test against Australia in Adelaide on Friday. Fresh from smashing his 30th Test century last week in Perth, Kohli failed to deliver in the first installment of the pink-ball Test on Day 1, perishing against a short of length delivery from Mitchell Starc that rose sharply and caught him at slips. The dismissal was similar to his wicket in the 1st innings in Perth when Josh Hazlewood troubled him with a similar ball, inducing an inside edge that was gathered at slip.
Australian players on Friday wore black armbands during the second pink-ball Test against India here in memory of former cricketers Phillip Hughes and Ian Redpath. Former Australia opening batter Hughes died in 2014 after being struck on the head by a short ball during a Sheffield Shield match. Redpath, also an opener, passed away earlier this month. Cricket Australia had earlier decided to commemorate the 10th death anniversary of Hughes during the day/night match. A documentary on the life of opening batter was also displayed at the Adelaide Oval before the start of play.
In his own words, he was not "serious" about cricket in his early days. But everything changed for Nitish Reddy when he saw tears rolling down his father's face owing to their financial struggles. It was a transformative moment for the young all-rounder who vowed to work harder and achieve success in the game, which culminated in a fine debut for India in the first Test against Australia at Perth. Reddy produced an impressive show, scoring 41 and 38 runs in the two innings against the likes of Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood at Optus Stadium. He also claimed a wicket as India registered a massive 295-run win.
India captain Rohit Sharma won the toss and elected to bat in the day-night second Test against Australia at Adelaide Oval on Friday.
Young India opener Yashasvi Jaiswal won the battle of nerves against Australia's experienced bowling quartet -- Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood, Mitchell Starc and Nathan Lyon -- in the 1st Test in Perth. In what was his first taste of Test cricket in Australia, Jaiswal was dismissed for a duck in the first innings, raising doubts over his ability to play new ball in pace-friendly tracks. However, the youngster proved everyone wrong in the second innings as he laid the foundation of India's big 295-run win, smashing 161.
Australia's left-arm fast-bowling spearhead Mitchell Starc said the team is hopeful of Josh Hazlewood featuring again in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy series after the pacer was ruled out of the upcoming day-night Adelaide Test against India due to a side strain. "He's hopeful. He, Nathan and I were in the gym during the week in Sydney. He's obviously here with us in Adelaide. So he's just getting some work done. Hopefully, he'll have a role at some point," Starc said, adding, "It's certainly not a big (tear). I think he caught it early enough and had the awareness of the discomfort to get it without having a big rip in it. We are very hopeful that - whether he takes part in Brisbane or not - (that he will play) still in this series," said Starc on cricket.com.au's Unplayable Podcast episode.
