Lotto Soudal’s difficult Tour de France continued on Saturday when Andreas Kron missed out on the chance of a possible Stage 14 win after suffering a puncture. Kron was part of the front group and looking strong as part of the lead group of four with Leon Sanchez (Bahrain Victorious), Felix Grosschartner (Bora–Hansgrohe) and eventual winner Michael Matthews (BikeExchange–Jayco) heading into the stage climax. Ad/> But with around 26km to go, disaster struck as his front wheel came a cropper, torpedoing his chances of glory.
Overall leader Jonas Vingegaard tracked Tadej Pogacar's attack all the way to the stage 14 finish line as the defending champion tried, but failed, to take time off his Danish rival on another tense, baking day at the Tour de France on Saturday.
Michael Matthews (BikeExchange–Jayco) produced a stunning ride to claim victory on Stage 14 of the Tour de France. After attacking with 52km to go, the Australian hit the front but was reeled in momentarily by Alberto Bettiol (EF Education–EasyPost) on the final climb.
Michael Matthews powered his way up the steep climb to the airfield in Mende to win his first Tour de France stage in five years and surely the finest of his four to date.
Australian Michael Matthews completed a vintage ride to win the 14th stage of the Tour de France on Saturday, a hilly trek from Saint Etienne to Mende, as Jonas Vingegaard held off defending champion Tadej Pogacar to retain the yellow jersey.
