Romeo Ferraris completed an intense weekend at the Vallelunga circuit, for its home round in the FIA ETCR eTouring Car World Cup. It wasn’t a weekend which went to plan for the manufacturer based in Opera, Milan, as despite showing themselves to be right on the money in terms of race pace, the squad had to finish earlier than foreseen a weekend that could have led to the second consecutive victory after the one in Zolder.
Mikel Azcona has been crowned King of the Weekend after an extraordinary fifth round of the FIA ETCR eTouring Car World Cup, Race IT, at Autodromo Vallelunga Piero Taruffi with continuing searing hot temperatures giving all competitors a stern test in the glorious Regione Lazio. Azcona took his first King of the Weekend win as his Hyundai Motorsport N squad were victorious for their first weekend too as they overtook Romeo Ferraris in the standings after a weekend which promised much for the local squad but ultimately delivered a very different weekend than that expected.
Pool FURIOUS presented a very different DHL Super Final than expected to end the fifth round of the FIA ETCR eTouring Car World Cup, Race IT, in Vallelunga with what looked like being a certain win for Hyundai Motorsport N driver Nicky Catsburg turning into a victory for CUPRA EKS driver Mattias Ekström. It was already a very different and depleted grid after Romeo Ferraris withdrew their cars following Bruno Spengler’s earlier accident in the earlier Pool FAST DHL Super Final meaning Maxime Martin was unable to continue his fine run of form from pole position and Giovanni Venturini would not have the chance to put in a fine performance to end his weekend either.
Maxime Martin withstood battles from a brace of CUPRAs to emerge victorious in Pool FURIOUS Quarter Final one whilst Nicky Catsburg had a far easier time of it in the Pool FURIOUS Quarter Finals in the fifith round of the FIA ETCR eTouring Car World Cup, Race IT, at Vallelunga. Maxime Martin proved to be a home hero for Romeo Ferraris with his second pole position in as many races with a 1m 19.692s lap to beat CUPRA EKS driver Tom Blomqvist to today’s fastest Pool FURIOUS time in searing heat at Vallelunga for the fifth round of the FIA ETCR eTouring Car World Cup. Whilst Matin could wow with his pace, team-mate Giovanni Venturini put in a display of a different kind as he tipped his Giulia ETCR into a high speed spin, from which he recovered with only damage to his tyres and pride. He wasn’t the only one having a wild time of it as Mattias Ekström went full rallycross spec for an offroad interlude in Q2, meaning it was his Q1 time that counted, placing him third.
For Romeo Ferraris, it’s the eve of the most awaited round in the 2022 season of the FIA ETCR eTouring Car World Cup with Race IT at home in Vallelunga. The track on the outskirts of Rome hosts the fifth round on the calendar, from 22 to 24 July, and the manufacturer based in Opera, Milan is on a wave of enthusiasm for the overall victory conquered by Maxime Martin in the previous Zolder round.
