David Warner Returns As Australia Name Squad For WTC Final, First Two Ashes Tests

Under-pressure David Warner was Wednesday spared the axe and included in Australia's squad for the first two Ashes Tests and the World Test Championship final, while all-rounder Mitchell Marsh earned a recall. Veteran opener Warner is fighting to save his career after a lean run with the bat that had some questioning whether his time was over. But the 36-year-old will head to England as part of a 17-man squad that also includes Josh Inglis as cover for wicketkeeper Alex Carey, and Marcus Harris and Matthew Renshaw as back-up batters.

Chief Selector George Bailey Provides Hint On Australia's Next Test Opener

Cricket Australia selection chair George Bailey has hinted that Marcus Harris is first in line to be David Warner's successor and become Australia's next Test opener. Harris hasn't played a Test match for his country since the final Ashes Test of the summer at the start of last year, but the 30-year-old was named ahead of a slew of other key batters in Cricket Australia's contract list for the 2023-24 season on Thursday. Harris was one of only three specialist openers to be given a new deal, with selectors opting to leave Matthew Renshaw and Cameron Bancroft off the 24-player list ahead of a busy summer that includes the ICC World Test Championship final against India in June and the Ashes series in England.

"They've Put Themselves In Tough Position": Michael Clarke On Australia's Nagpur Test 'Decision'

Rattled by a humiliating defeat against India in the first Test at Nagpur, the Australian cricket team needs to go back to the drawing board and craft a strategy to beat India in their own home. While lack of practice matches didn't help the tourists, their decision to play Matt Renshaw over Travis Head also seems to have backfired. While there's a good possibility of Head's return for the second Test in Delhi, former Australia captain Michael Clarke feels the Aussies have put themselves in a tough position.
