Ben Stokes will end his one-day international retirement to feature for England at this year’s 50-over World Cup, according to reports.
England coach Matthew Mott wants Ben Stokes to play in the England squad for the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup in India. Ben Stokes retired from One Day Internationals in July 2022 and, following the Ashes, repeated his desire to remain retired from the 50-over format in order to be fit for the Test series against India in early 2024. Stokes suffered a knee injury in New Zealand in February, forcing him to miss most of the Indian Premier League season. Despite being ready to captain England in the Ashes, he was primarily limited to batting owing to the injury, bowling only 29 overs in five matches.
England white-ball coach Matthew Mott revealed that England are willing to make a gamble on Jofra Archer's fitness for the upcoming ICC Men's Cricket World Cup in India by managing his workload through the tournament. Archer's injury issues date back to early 2020 when he sustained a stress fracture that sidelined him for the first half of the year. In early 2021, he had to go under the knife following another injury at home. A stress injury on his back in May 2022 put him on the shelf for the entirety of the year.
Australia's World Cup winning captain Ricky Ponting has revealed that he was approached for the England Test coaching role before Brendon McCullum took over last year. After an embarrassing 0-4 Ashes defeat Down Under, the England men's team set up went through a massive overhaul with McCullum and Matthew Mott replacing Chris Silverwood as the Test and white-ball coaches respectively. Test skipper Joe Root also stepped down from captaincy while batting mentor Graham Thorpe and managing director Ashley Giles also lost their jobs.
England were crowned champions of the 2022 ICC T20 World Cup in November as they defeated Pakistan by five wickets in what eventually turned out to be a comprehensive final victory. It was England's second T20 World Cup win, 12 years after Paul Collingwood's team had beaten Australia to win the first ICC title for the 'Three Lions' in 2010. Ben Stokes slammed an unbeaten fifty to take the team home after Sam Curran's brilliance with the ball had restricted Pakistan to a below-par total of 137 runs. England are the first team ever to hold the 50-over World Cup and the T20 World Cup titles together.
England's 3-0 defeat in their Twenty20 series in Bangladesh was a real "eye-opener" for the world champions, white-ball coach Matthew Mott said.
England fast bowler Jofra Archer is "ticking all the boxes" following his return from debilitating elbow and back injuries but is still "not fully firing on all cylinders", their white-ball Australian head coach Matthew Mott has said. Archer, 27, has not payed for England since March 2021 and not taken part in any competitive match since July 2021, as he struggled with elbow injuries and back stress fracture. He was scheduled to return to the field last year after undergoing multiple elbow surgeries in 2021 but a back stress fracture days before his comeback further delayed his return.
England will be taking no risks with fast bowler Jofra Archer's return to action following his 22-month injury nightmare.
