The DS Techeetah driver kept Vandoorne at arms' length in the latter stages of a frenetic second race at the Brooklyn Street Circuit, where a flurry of late yellow flags reduced the Belgian's opportunity to mount a pass.
Nick Cassidy was naturally delighted with his victory at the first of two New York E-Prix on Saturday, after a dramatic ending to the race saw a red flag caused by torrential rain.
RIYADH: Nick Cassidy of Envision Racing claimed a maiden Formula E race win in the New York City E-Prix, ahead of Lucas di Grassi of ROKiT Venturi Racing and teammate Robin Frijns.
In a typically battling drive, Frijns made multiple well-judged passes to move up the order and ultimately claim a podium finish, dispatching Nissan's Sebastien Buemi first before getting into the race lead battle with the front trio of cars.
The sudden downpour of rain that hit the race on the 30th lap at the Brooklyn Street Circuit precipitated leader Nick Cassidy aquaplaning into the wall at Turn 6, into which di Grassi followed him.
As the rain picked up in intensity in the Red Hook district of Brooklyn, the circuit quickly became waterlogged and caused a flurry of incidents - with race leader Nick Cassidy dumping his Envision machine into the wall, where he was followed by Lucas di Grassi and Stoffel Vandoorne.
The Kiwi had largely controlled the race at the Brooklyn Street Circuit from pole and had built a solid gap over eventual runner-up Lucas di Grassi, as light rain suddenly intensified and soaked the track.
