Formula E: Nick Cassidy reflects on dramatic victory at New York E-Prix

Nick Cassidy was naturally delighted with his victory at the first of two New York E-Prix on Saturday, after a dramatic ending to the race saw a red flag caused by torrential rain.

The Formula E season is in its final throes with three weekends left to decide the championship, with New York hosting two races this weekend.

The Big Apple provided suitable drama in race one as well, with a downpour towards the end of the E-Prix proving heavy enough to spark a red flag, after the majority of the field found themselves skating off of the track and into the wall.

Indeed, Cassidy was among those with him losing the lead of the race – something he’d held from the get-go after starting from pole – with him aquaplaning into the barriers and followed in by Stoffel Vandoorne and Lucas Di Grassi.

Elsewhere, other collisions and crashes were taking place in the cloudburst, but thankfully everyone was okay as the red flag was flown.

In the end, race control decided to call the race with a lap counted back, awarding Cassidy the victory, and he had this to say after the dust finally settled:

“It is such a rollercoaster of emotions”, he said.

“I was pretty calm after everything happened – but obviously very disappointed initially. It felt like I did everything right today, it felt like it was in the bag with ten to go, then it started raining. I was initially very disappointed considering that, but – and I know I’m biased – I think [calling the race] is the right decision.

“[When finding out he won] I said in the garage ‘are you sure, are you sure?!’ It is difficult for me tosay too much, but I am super happy with the win. I don’t want to talk about the decision-makingprocess and all that – but in terms of the race the team did a
