Teenager Linda Fruhvirtova became the youngest player to be ranked inside the world’s top 100, after winning the Chennai Open.
Right from the first set, Linda was under pressure from her 30-year-old opponent. The youngster was able to fight back the first two times she was pushed to a corner. Magda had a triple break point in the third game of that set but Linda staved off the challenge to hold serve for a 2-1 lead. If that wasn't enough, in the fifth game --- Magda had a breakpoint but Linda once again held her ground for a 3-2 lead. However, Magda finally broke her opponent in the 9th game to go 5-4 up. Magda then went on to wrap up the first set on her first set point in 57 minutes.
The slug-fest began when Linda, ranked 130th in the world, won the first game despite two back-to-back double faults in the opening set. Linda had a break point in the second but couldn’t go on to convert it. The teenager held serve in the third game for a 2-1 lead.
No. 1 seed Emma Raducanu advanced to the second round of the Zavarovalnica Sava Portoroz when her first-round opponent, Dayana Yastremska of Ukraine, retired Monday night in Portoroz, Slovenia.
The WTA (Women's Tennis Association) released the players’ list on Tuesday. The main draw comprises 32 players out of which 21 are direct acceptances, 1 special exempt, 4 wild cards and 6 qualifiers.
Emma Raducanu suffered significant blister issues on her right foot as Great Britain's hopes of qualifying for the Billie Jean King Cup finals ended in a gutsy 3-2 defeat to the Czech Republic.
Poland's world number one Iga Swiatek handed Romania's Andreea Prisacariu a double bagel en route to victory in their Billie Jean King Cup qualifier on Saturday, securing the decisive third point in the tie and a spot in November's finals for the first time.
In a simple sport usually contested head-to-head with only two individuals involved, the nuances of team tennis competitions so often lend themselves to unpredictability and chaos. Such drama unfolded freely on a cold afternoon in Prague as Great Britain fought admirably to push the Czech Republic all the way to an unlikely deciding fifth rubber in the Billie Jean King Cup qualifiers before finally losing 3-2.
