The family that owns the Chicago Cubs, who are bidding for Premier League club Chelsea and facing social media criticism in England due to past offensive comments made by the family's patriarch, underlined their anti-racism credentials Wednesday.
LONDON: The owners of the Chicago Cubs, who are bidding for Premier League club Chelsea, touted their anti-racism credentials Wednesday after a backlash in England about offensive comments by the Ricketts family patriarch. It has been three years since Joe Ricketts apologized after online media outlet Splinter News published emails featuring him making Islamophobic comments, such as “Islam is a cult and not a religion.” The racist comments have gained a renewed focus during the competitive bidding contest to buy Chelsea, which has been put up for sale after Russian owner Roman Abramovich was sanctioned by the British government over his ties to President Vladimir Putin amid the war on Ukraine.
The list of contenders to buy Chelsea is set to be whittled down to preferred bidders this week.
Premier League club Chelsea, declared that "diversity is central to our values" after a fan backlash over previous racist remarks. The reaction was in response to leaked emails from 2019 in which American businessman Joe Ricketts described Muslims as his "enemy". Sources close to the deal have told Reuters Joe has nothing to do with the Chelsea offer, with his son Tom fronting it.
