MADRID: There was no historic comeback for Liverpool. Real Madrid’s title defense in the Champions League rolls into the quarterfinals.

Real Madrid cruised into the Champions League quarter finals after the holders’ five-star display at Anfield meant a low-key 1-0 win at the Bernabeu was enough to emphatically knock Liverpool out of the competition. The Merseysiders have produced heroic comebacks in the past, but it was never on the cards here as Karim Benzema netted the only goal of the game 12 minutes from time to secure a 6-2 victory on aggregate for Carlo Ancelotti’s Spanish champions.
Michael Owen has stressed that Liverpool’s players and management “deserve a bit of patience” after all the club has achieved in recent years. Jurgen Klopp’s side have struggled for consistency this season, as perfectly demonstrated recently when they followed up a remarkable 7-0 win over rivals Manchester United with a 1-0 loss at Bournemouth less than a week later.
