LONDON : The sight of the All England Club's manicured lawns proved irresistible for Venus Williams as the multiple Grand Slam champion made an unexpected - and winning - return after almost a year off court to play at Wimbledon on Friday.
There’s a certain lèse-majesté in turning up at Wimbledon and calling yourself Venus. And it’s worse if the original Venus herself is in attendance, staring you down from the other side of the net. Certainly, Michael Venus, the world No 11 doubles player from New Zealand, would have known that every time the wags in the crowd shouted “C’mon Venus!” (or even “Marry me, Venus!”), they were exclusively cheering for the five-time Wimbledon women’s singles champion, at whom he was firing treasonable volleys.
It was another busy day at Wimbledon, with plenty of notable events on and off the court.
LONDON — Venus Williams arrived at Wimbledon last week with no intentions of competing. But then she had a change of heart.
Venus Williams has won her first match on her return to the tour with a three sets win with Jamie Murray in the mixed doubles. The pair beat Alicja Rosolska and Michael Venus 6-3 6-7(3) 6-3 in the first round in front of a boisterous crowd inside No. 1 Court.
Cameron Norrie and Heather Watson will look to keep the British momentum going on day five when they attempt to take steps into the unknown.
Venus Williams will play Wimbledon for a 24th time after all.
