After all the anger and bloodletting of Pakistan’s premature exit from the T20 World Cup, there was a hint of perspective. Maybe even a little sympathy.
Former champions Pakistan restored a semblance of pride with a toiling three-wicket win over Ireland in their inconsequential final game of the T20 World Cup on Sunday. The 2009 champions, who were eliminated following their loss to India and the USA in the earlier group matches, restricted Ireland to 106 for 9 after opting to bowl with Shaheen Shah Afridi (3/22) leading the show. Despite chasing a not-so-daunting target, Pakistan's fragile batting was once again exposed as they slumped to 62 for six in 11 overs, raising the vision of another collapse. But skipper Babar Azam (32 not out) and Abbas Afridi (17) shared a 33-run stand to take them home at 111 for 7 in 18.5 overs.
Pakistan cricket is at its lowest point and needs to make radical changes, all-rounder Imad Wasim said after the team failed to get out of the group stage of the T20 World Cup. The 2009 champions, beaten finalists two years ago, lost to the USA and India with their sole victory coming against Canada. Pakistan's final game is on Sunday against Ireland, which is now a dead rubber with both teams already eliminated. Asked about the exit, with the USA beating Pakistan to Super Eight qualification, along with India, Wasim said there was no doubt about the level of disappointment.
Pakistan all-rounder Imad Wasim expressed his disappointment after the team's shocking exit from the T20 World Cup in the group stage. However, Imad suggested that the team's disappointing show could be a blessing in disguise as it will give the players a chance to do some soul searching and figure out what needs to be done to avoid this capitulation in the future. Imad, alongside veteran pacer Mohammad Amir, was recalled to the side for the tournament on the back of their performances in the Pakistan Super League (PSL).
The Pakistan cricket is going through a tough time at the T20 World Cup 2024. After losing its first two matches against USA and India, Pakistan finally notched its first win in the T20 World Cup 2024 by defeating Canada on Tuesday. Even then, Pakistan is not in the safe zone. USA are in a better spot from Pakistan cricket team. Babar Azam and Co. would hope for Pakistan other teams' result to go in their favour so that they have chance at qualifying for the Super 8.
Former Pakistan skipper Salim Malik, while discussing the team's loss to India at the T20 World Cup 2024, accused Imad Wasim of deliberately wasting balls. Chasing an underwhelming 120-run target, Pakistani batters consumed 59 dot balls to be restricted to 113 for 7 in New York on Sunday. Wasim took 23 balls to score his 15 runs in the losing cause. "You look at his (Wasim) innings and it appears as if he was wasting balls not scoring runs and making things difficult in the run-chase," Malik said on 24 News channel.
Former Pakistan cricket team chief selector Mohammad Wasim accused Imad Wasim of hiding a knee injury after the Babar Azam-led side slumped to a loss against India in the T20 World Cup 2024 on Sunday. Imad missed the first group stage match against United States due to a rib injury but Wasim said on a Pakistan channel that he was 'faking it' and he has struggled with the knee injury for the last five years. Wasim went on to say that Imad has mislead the spectators with his false narrative before adding that it was one of the reasons why he was dropped from the side during Wasim's tenure.
Former Pakistan cricket team captain Mohammad Hafeez called the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) 'greedy' and even accused them to "making deals" with players like Mohammad Amir and Imad Wasim to include them in the squad for the T20 World Cup 2024. Following Pakistan's 6-run loss against India in Group A on Sunday, Hafeez said that although players like Amir and Wasim never play in the domestic circuit, they are preferred for big tournaments in place of cricketers who perform consistently.
