Last year's finalist Stefanos Tsitsipas saw his French Open hopes ended in four sets at the hands of Danish teenager Holger Rune, while second seed Daniil Medvedev was shocked by Marin Cilic in a sensational display by the Croatian under the lights.
It took until the fourth round, but now it's the high-seeded men who are exiting the French Open.
Marin Cilic produced a brilliant display to beat world No. 2 Daniil Medvedev in straight sets and reach the quarter-finals of the French Open for the third time. Medvedev had won all three previous meetings against Cilic and was yet to drop a set at the tournament.
Stefanos Tsitsipas saw his hopes of a deep French Open run ended by 19-year-old Holger Rune. The fourth seed, who made the final last year, was beaten 7-5 3-6 6-3 6-4 in a stunning last-16 upset. Andrey Rublev made the quarter-finals of the French Open after Jannik Sinner retired with injury in the third set of their fourth-round clash. Rublev was leading 1-6 6-4 2-0 when the Italian ended the match due to a knee problem. Ad/> Rublev, who had never made it past the quarter-finals of a Grand Slam, will next face either second seed Daniil Medvedev or Marin Cilic.
Teenager Holger Rune became the first Danish man to reach the French Open quarter-finals on Monday when he shocked world number four Stefanos Tsitsipas and declared: "I can beat anyone". Rune, just 19 and ranked 40, swept to a memorable 7-5, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 win over the 2021 runner-up on the back of 54 winners and will face Norway's eighth seed Casper Ruud for a place in the semi-finals. The last Danish man to reach the last-eight at any Slam was Jan Leschly in the 1967 US Championships. "I have strong belief in myself that if I really focus and play my tennis, I can beat almost everybody on tour," said Rune.
