Ireland in the 2-match T20I series starting Sunday. It will be the first time Hardik will be captaining India.
Hardik Pandya has had a year to remember so far as he first led Gujarat Titans to ultimate glory in Indian Premier League (IPL) in their debut season and then made his comeback to the national side for the South Africa series. Now, he would be leading Team India in the two-match series against Ireland. Former BCCI selector Kiran More opened on Hardik's early days in his academy and how he turned out to be a surprise package with the ball in hand.
The recently-concluded India vs South Africa series saw an anti-climax as the decider match got washed out due to rain. However, by then, the spectators had already witnessed a neck-and-neck contest between the two sides that saw the series being drawn 2-2. It started with the Proteas' authority and concluded with a memorable comeback by Team India. Though the final match couldn't take place, the series gave a good opportunity to both the sides to test themselves ahead of the T20 World Cup in Australia later this year.
Sanju Samson has got yet another opportunity to consolidate his place in the Indian cricket team. He is part of the Hardik Pandya-led India squad that will play two T20Is against Ireland later this month. With several other wicketkeeper-batters like Rishabh Pant, Ishan Kishan, and the veteran Dinesh Karthik playing well with far more consistency than the 27-year-old, it is going to be a daunting task for Samson to make it to the T20 World Cup squad. Samson has time and again impressed with his abilities only to falter with his consistency.
India's 17-member squad for the two T20Is against Ireland later this month had several youngsters getting selected, some of whom did really well in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022. The team will be led by Hardik Pandya and will be another opportunity for the Indian team management to zero in on the players who are likely to make it to the T20 World Cup, going to be held in Australia in October-November. However, one name that was missing from the squad was Rahul Tewatia.
The Rishabh Pant-led Indian cricket team drew 2-2 in the five match T20I series against South Africa after the fifth game was abandoned due to rain. It was the star wicketkeeper-batter's first series as India captain. Under Pant, the Men in Blue lost the first two games before bouncing back in style in the third and fourth matches. However, Pant's form with the bat was not up to the mark. In five matches, he scored only 58 runs at an average of 14.50.
With a few of the big guns rested, the man chosen to lead the 17-man Indian squad for this tour is Hardik Pandya, who till just a short while back was struggling to bowl, wasn't really effective with the bat and was then on the sidelines, with nagging lower back issues. It's something that has plagued him for a long time. He underwent back surgery in London in 2019, before the injury came back to haunt him again. Which is why in IPL 2022, when the Gujarat Titans named him as their captain after bringing him onboard as a pre-auction signing, there were more than a few raised eyebrows. How effective would Hardik be in shouldering the responsibilities of captaincy? Was it the right call to name him captain of a debutant IPL team, which would be looking to make a mark in their maiden season? Would he be able to bowl? Hardik had an answer for each of those questions and more. What we saw in IPL 2022 was Hardik 2.0. A calmer, more focused version of the very talented all-rounder, who took to captaincy like a fish to water.
