Highlights from the Austrian Grand Prix
Valtteri Bottas has been impressed by the way George Russell has adapted to the challenge of partnering Lewis Hamilton at Mercedes.
Zhou Guanyu says he is ready to race again after his terrifying crash at the British Grand Prix.
Alfa Romeo driver Zhou Guanyu has spoken to the media at length for the first time after his frightening crash at Silverstone on Sunday during the British Grand Prix. Zhou — 2022’s sole rookie — suffered his first major crash seconds into the race when his car made contact with Mercedes' George Russell, who had been clipped by AlphaTauri driver Pierre Gasly. Briton George Russell said natural instinct drove him to jump out of his Mercedes to check on Chinese racer Guanyu Zhou after a crash on the opening lap of last week's British Grand Prix left the Formula One rookie trapped upside down in his Alfa Romeo.
George Russell has been in great form throughout 2022. Having joined the Mercedes-AMG team after a three-year spell at Williams, he hit the ground running and finished each of the opening nine races inside the top five. He even secured two podium finishes in the process.
There is no doubting the intensity, the palpable will to win radiating from George Russell. Yet achieving success is a journey the British driver acknowledges is forged in the crucible of competition, where sometimes the hardest lessons are the most valuable. “I have learned that failure is important,” he says with the air of a veteran. “It can’t always be smooth sailing, you have to look inward rather than blame others.”
