Former Bangladesh captain Mushfiqur Rahim announced his retirement from Twenty20 international cricket on Sunday, three days after the team's unceremonious exit from the Asia Cup.
Pakistan are missing the services of Shaheen Shah Afridi at the ongoing Asia Cup, and wicketkeeper-batter feels that not even a single bowler from the current crop can fill the shoes of the star pacer. Afridi picked up a knee injury during Pakistan's two-match Test series against Sri Lanka, which ruled him out of the Asia Cup. While the likes of Naseem Shah and Shahnawaz Dahani have performed well so far in the tournament, Rizwan said that filling Afridi's shoes isn't easy.
Bangladesh wicketkeeper-batter and former captain, Mushfiqur Rahim on Sunday announced his retirement from T20I internationals. Rahim had played both matches for Bangladesh in the ongoing Asia Cup, but the Shakib-Al-Hasan led side failed to progress to the Super 4s stage after suffering defeats against Afghanistan and Sri Lanka. Rahim announced his retirement on Twitter, saying he will focus on ODIs and Tests from now on.
Mushfiqur Rahim on Sunday announced his retirement from T20Is to focus on the longer formats. The 35-year-old former Bangladesh captain, however, intends to continue playing franchise cricket "when the opportunity arrives". "I would like to announce my retirement from T20 INTERNATIONALS and focus on Test and ODI formats of the game," Mushfiqur wrote on his Twitter. "I will be available to play franchise leagues when the opportunity arrives. Looking forward to proudly represent my nation in the two formats," he added.
Virat Kohli remains a key player for India, said head coach Rahul Dravid, who is happy with the refreshed former captain's Asia Cup form and said people should not get hung up with statistics.
Asia Cup. Pakistan have also been hit by multiple injuries, while India suffered a blow when all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja was ruled out of the tournament with a knee injury earlier. Axar Patel has replaced Jadeja in the Indian squad and is expected to play tonight vs Pakistan. While India have more experience and the more well balanced squad the Pakistan pacers, though not very experienced, are more than capable of troubling the best of batters. The Men in Green though suffered another injury blow ahead of their Super 4 clash vs India with young pacer Shahnawaz Dahani being ruled out of this match with a side strain. Either Hasan Ali or Mohammad Hasnanin are likely to replace Dahani in the Pakistan playing XI. Hasan Ali is the more experienced pacer, but Hasnain is quicker.
Pakistan clash. The two sub-continental heavyweights will clash tonight for a second time in the ongoing Asia Cup. This time it will be in the crucial Super 4s stage. India and Pakistan are the favourites also to play each other in the final. The rivalry is a storied one and has produced some of the most unforgettable cricket action over the decades. But often, especially in recent times, an India vs Pakistan clash hasn't lived up to the hype that it generates, producing almost one-sided affairs. The league stage match in the Asia Cup this time though was a reminder of just how exciting this contest can be, with India pulling off a 5 wicket win, with 2 balls left.
Excited to face arch-rivals India for the second time in the Asia Cup on Sunday, Pakistan wicketkeeper-batter Mohammad Rizwan said his team-mates had joked each other that it's a "best of three-match series" between the two sides in the ongoing continental tournament. India and Pakistan can still face in the summit clash here on September 11 whatever the outcome of the match on Sunday and that will make the arch-rivals face each other three times -- all of them on Sundays. India had beaten Pakistan by five wickets last Sunday.
