The third stage of the Giro d'Italia will take riders from Vasto to Melfi, with Remco Evenepoel once again in the leader's jersey. Evenepoel, Primoz Roglic and Geraint Thomas are among the big names that will be covering the hilly 216km stage, with more to come in the fourth ahead of a summit finish in the latter.
The second stage of the Giro d'Italia will take riders from Teramo to San Salvo. Remco Evenepoel, Primoz Roglic and Geraint Thomas are among the big names that will be covering the relatively flat 201km stage before tackling medium mountains in stages three and four ahead of a summit finish in the latter.
Alberto Contador thinks it will be clear by the Giro d'Italia's first rest day which of Tao Geoghegan Hart or Geraint Thomas is Ineos Grenadiers' leader in the race. The British outfit have gone into the 2023 edition of the famous race effectively with dual leadership, with further high-quality cards to play in the form of Filippo Ganna and Thymen Arensman too. Ad It's perhaps part of a wider bid to destabilise pre-race favourites Primoz Roglic and Remco Evenepoel during the three-week parcours, which begins on Saturday, May 6 in Fossacesia.
It is not long until the 2023 Giro d'Italia gets underway on May 6 in Ortona with the 106th edition culminating in what will surely be an enthralling and dramatic finale in Rome. The race will see Britain's Mark Cavendish (Astana Qazaqstan) attempting to find some form ahead of his bid for the Tour de France stage record later this year.
Tobias Foss says it is hard to look past Primoz Roglic (Jumbo-Visma) and Remco Evenepoel (Soudal Quick-Step) in the battle for the Giro d’Italia pink jersey. Foss was originally due to line up at the Giro in support of his team-mate Roglic, but was ruled out of the grand tour after testing positive for Covid-19.
Eurosport's Alberto Contador believes that it is impossible to discount yet more stage wins for British cycling legend Mark Cavendish at this year’s Grand Tours. The 37-year-old Astana Qazaqstan Team rider is set to take part in the Giro d’Italia and the Tour de France, with the Vuelta a Espana also a possibility. Ad He has a record-equalling 34 stage victories on the Tour, while his 53 stage wins across the three most prestigious events on the calendar represent one of the best records in the history of cycling.
Geraint Thomas may struggle to keep up with Primoz Roglic and Remco Evenepoel at the upcoming Giro d'Italia, reckons Eurosport's Alberto Contador. Thomas finished third at last year's Tour de France, which was a commendable performance given the superiority of Tadej Pogacar and eventual winner Jonas Vingegaard.
Team Jumbo-Visma’s preparations for the Giro d'Italia have taken a huge hit with Primoz Roglic’s support team affected by a Covid-19 outbreak. Robert Gesink and Tobias Foss both contracted the virus at the Tour de Romandie last week and have now withdrawn from the team’s provisional eight-man line-up. Ad Jos van Emden and Rohan Dennis have been drafted in to replace the duo, with the latter playing a key role in Tao Geoghegan Hart's surprise Giro victory for Ineos Grenadiers in 2020.
