Alberto Contador has admitted he is worried as to whether Tadej Pogacar’s wrist injury has impacted on his Tour de France preparations, but feels the Grand Tour is between the Slovenian and defending champion Jonas Vingegaard. Pogacar had a stellar spring, winning Paris-Nice, Ronde Van Vlaanderen, Amstel Gold and La Fleche Wallonne to suggest he was in excellent shape to battle for a third Tour de France win. Stage 13 of the Giro d'Italia takes the riders into the mountains, and GC contenders are set to dominate on a summit finish at Crans Montana. With pre-race favourite Remco Evenepoel withdrawing after a positive Covid-19 test, Primoz Roglic has assumed favouritism.
After two relatively simple stages – albeit the first in freezing rain – things step up a little on Stage 12 of the Giro d’Italia as we flirt with the mountains again. The profile is not particularly challenging, however, so we can expect plenty of early action as our non-GC stars attempt to get in the day’s breakaway in the knowledge they may not be caught. Ad The main test is the Cat.
Stage 11 of the 2023 Giro d'Italia is the longest stage of this year's race, a 219km route from Camaiore to Tortona. Geraint Thomas (Ineos Grenadiers) will wear the leader's maglia rosa for a second time following the shock withdrawal of Remco Evenepoel (Soudal-Quick Step) after a positive Covid-19 test.
