LONDON, Aug 6 : Formula E is confident its 2026-27 season will start in Saudi Arabia in December but can push back the opening race to Mexico in January if events in the region dictate, the all-electric racing series' chief executive Jeff Dodds said on Thursday.
SANAA/ADEN: Thousands of miles from North America, where the World Cup is bringing together soccer fans from countries that are otherwise at odds, one of football’s least heralded nations is experiencing its own moment of unity. In a stadium in the ancient city of Sanaa, hundreds have turned out to watch a match between two teams from areas controlled by different factions in Yemen’s 12-year-old civil war. Since May, a truce signed in 2022 has seemed firm enough to allow a resumption of the professional Yemen National League for the first time since 2014. Photos are taken and pennants are exchanged between the captains of Wahda Sanaa, whose city is under the control of the Houthi militia, and Shaab Hadramout, whose province is controlled by a Saudi-backed regional coalition and by separatists. The referee starts the match. A Wahda Sanaa player grabs his head in frustration at missing a chance — and fans in garish wigs and face paint whistle their dismay.
JEDDAH: Saudi Arabia have been drawn in a tough Group A for the preliminary round of the 27th Gulf Cup, scheduled to be held later this year in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
SINGAPORE: The Lions will face former Asian Cup champions Australia and Iraq at the 2027 Asian Cup following the group stage draw late on Saturday (May 9) in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
RIYADH: Record winners Japan were drawn in the same group as champions Qatar for next year’s AFC Asian Cup, while hosts Saudi Arabia will meet Kuwait, Oman and Palestine. The draw for the 2027 edition of the continent’s showpiece event, which runs from January 7 to February 5, took place on Saturday in Diriyah on the outskirts of Riyadh. Saudi Arabia is staging the Asian Cup for the first time as the kingdom views the tournament as a precursor to hosting the 2034 World Cup. For the third time running, the Asian Cup will feature 24 national teams, with 23 already confirmed. The sole remaining spot will go to either Lebanon or Yemen, who contest a play-off in Doha on June 4. A tie would be enough for Lebanon to qualify. At the draw, Japan were placed in Group F alongside Qatar, Thailand and Indonesia. Japan have lifted the trophy a record four times, although they have not won the tournament since 2011. Saudi Arabia and Iran each have three wins, with Qatar crowned champions for the past two tournaments, in 2019 and 2023. Last time out, the 2022 FIFA World Cup hosts defeated Jordan 3-1 in the final. Both countries have qualified for this summer’s global finals, with Jordan competing for the first time. On Saturday, teams were divided into four pots of six in accordance with the latest FIFA ranking as of April 1. At 18th in the official standings, Japan are the lead country in Asia, with Iran second (No.
