TAMPA, Fla. — Tampa Bay Buccaneers and former Oklahoma standout quarterback Baker Mayfield was forced to take the podium for his weekly Wednesday news conference in a Michigan practice jersey after the Sooners' 17-10 loss to the Wolverines last week and a friendly wager with Bucs head coach Todd Bowles.
Your first impression matters only until your second one. After a brilliant season at North Texas and a much-hyped transfer, Oklahoma State's Drew Mestemaker began life in Stillwater with an absolute dud. Playing against the Tulsa team that ended Mike Gundy's tenure a year earlier, Mestemaker was harassed constantly and unable to find lanes for scrambling. He was mostly relegated to checkdowns and averaged just 4.5 yards per dropback with more interceptions (two) and sacks (two) than touchdowns (one). The Cowboys lost 24-10, and the bloom immediately came off the rose.
You could say that college football college football'd particularly hard in Week 2.
Week 2 gave us a finish that will be remembered for years, plus shocking upsets that impacted this week's bowl game and playoff projections.
Two days after then-No. 6 Oregon fell to unranked Oklahoma State in the biggest upset of this college football season to date, Ducks coach Dan Lanning said Monday that there has been a «lack of leadership» across his team through two games.
The story of Week 2 is obvious. Texas grabbed a win against an AP No. 1 team for the first time in years and established itself as a true contender for the national title.
The biggest game of the season so far lived up to expectations, with Texas avenging last year's loss to Ohio State by mounting a second-half comeback to win the second leg of the home-and-home. That also, obviously, had an implication for this week's rankings, with the Buckeyes vacating the top spot in the poll and the Longhorns replacing them. There was noise elsewhere in the top 10, with Oregon losing unexpectedly to Oklahoma State. Next week, there will be more major action with top-10 foes LSU and Ole Miss facing off in Oxford.
