Top Sri Lanka cricketers back anti-government protests

cricket stars are backing protests sweeping the island nation over a spiralling economic crisis, with former Test captain Mahela Jayawardene urging government leaders to resign. The country is suffering severe shortages of food, fuel and other essentials -- along with record inflation and crippling power cuts -- in its most painful downturn since independence from Britain in 1948. Protests condemning the government's management of the crisis were staged around the island on the weekend in defiance of a curfew and a state of emergency that saw troops deployed to keep order on the streets. Jayawardene, who now coaches Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League, said Sri Lanka's leadership had lost the public's confidence. Current and former cricketers enjoy a massive fan following in Sri Lanka and their comments carry weight. "True leaders own up to mistakes," Jayawardene wrote on Twitter. "There is massive urgency here to protect the people of our country united in their suffering," he added. "Certain people controlling the economy of this country have lost the people's confidence and must stand down. We then need a good team to give the country confidence and belief."

"People Of Sri Lanka Deserve Better": Mahela Jayawardene, Bhanuka Rajapaksa Amid Deepening Crisis

Former Sri Lanka captain Mahela Jayawardene and current batting star Bhanuka Rajapaksa have expressed their anguish over the ongoing turmoil in the country. Both Jaywardene and Rajapaksa, currently involved in the ongoing IPL 2022, took to Twitter to show solidarity with their countrymen. Sri Lanka is in the grip of an unprecedented shortage of food, fuel and other essentials -- along with record inflation and crippling power cuts with no sign of an end to the economic woes. Crisis-hit Sri Lanka's cabinet resigned en masse from their positions at a late-night meeting Sunday, the education minister said, as anti-government protests escalated despite curfews.

Watch: MS Dhoni Shows Quick Reflexes To Run Out Bhanuka Rajapaksa In CSK vs PBKS IPL 2022 Match

Despite being 40 years old, MS Dhoni showcased his quick reflexes in Match 11 of the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 season at the Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai. The veteran played his part in the dismissal of Punjab Kings' (PBKS) Bhanuka Rajapaksa, who departed after a huge mix-up against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) on Sunday. Receiving a delivery from Chris Jordan in the second over, the Sri Lankan batter directed it to the left of the bowler and took off for a single. Midway through, he realised Dhawan had turned down the run and tried to get back to the striker's end, but Jordan and Dhoni did the rest. The English pacer had a pop at the batter's end and missed, but Dhoni was there to cover for his teammate and dived to collect the ball and parry it onto the stumps.
