The UAE’s chances of playing at the Asia Cup look increasingly remote after they succumbed to Nepal’s bowlers in the ACC Premier Cup final in Kathmandu on Monday.
Contradicting media reports that Asia Cup could be postponed and a parallel tournament, excluding Pakistan, could be played in Dubai in the same window, the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) sources on Monday said that they have not sent out any such proposal to the member nations. A report in Pakistan media claimed that if PCB will not agree to play Asia Cup at a neutral venue, the tournament could be taken away from the country.
The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 match between Punjab Kings and Lucknow Super Giants turned out to be a historic clash, with the KL Rahul-led side creating a mountain of runs, scoring 257 while batting first. Though Punjab themselves also put over 200 runs on the board, while chasing the target, they eventually ended 56 runs shy of LSG's total. After the game, Pakistan great Wasim Akram took a swipe at PBKS pace duo of Arshdeep Singh and Kagiso Rabada for the manner in which they bowled in the match.
Fakhar Zaman smashed a third consecutive century to guide Pakistan to a seven-wicket victory over New Zealand in the second one-day international on Saturday. The 33-year-old left-handed opener hit an undefeated 180 off 144 balls for his tenth ODI hundred. It followed his 117 in the first match and 101 against the same opponents in January as Pakistan chased a stiff 337-run target in 48.2 overs. The win gives Pakistan a 2-0 lead in the five-match series with the last three matches in Karachi on May 3, 5 and 7.
Pakistan's Fakhar Zaman scored a magnificent unbeaten 180, his third century in his last three one-day internationals, to fire the hosts to a seven-wicket victory over New Zealand and a 2-0 lead in the series on Saturday.
Daryl Mitchell hit a second successive century while Tom Latham missed a ton by two runs as New Zealand piled up 336-5 in the second one-day international against Pakistan in Rawalpindi on Saturday. The stylish one-drop batter improved on his 113 in the first ODI on Thursday with 129 for 119 balls, and was ably supported by Latham (98) and Chad Bowes (51) after New Zealand were sent in to bat by Pakistan. Mitchell smashed three sixes and eight boundaries and consolidated the innings through a third-wicket stand of 183 with skipper Latham, as the pair took full advantage of a flat pitch.
It was an embarrassing moment for Pakistan cricket as the second ODI encounter between Pakistan and New Zealand was halted for an extremely unusual reason. The match was just one over old when the on-field officials realised that the dimensions of the 30 yard circle was not correct. The match, which was being played at Rawalpindi, was stopped as the umpires rectified the circle with help from the ground officials. According to reports in Pakistan media, umpire Aleem Dar took charge of rectifying the measurements and he measured the distance with steps.
Forty-four days after they had their path to the World Cup complicated by an emotional defeat via Duckworth Lewis Stern in Kathmandu, UAE were able to benefit from cricket’s rain-revision method after another extraordinary day in Nepal’s capital.
